If you have ever read Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories or novels or seen BBC's Sherlock series, you know about Sherlock's extraordinary skills of observation, induction, and deduction. In Sherlock, it takes the likes of Jim Moriarty and Irene Adler to throw him off.

So, this post is for what Sherlock can know. If you want him to know something about your character but can't think of how he could figure it out, tell me. We can work together to decide on something that would indicate it. Otherwise, consult the list below and carefully consider what sort of marks your character would have and what that would reveal, particularly in combination with each other.

A good example of what Sherlock is capable of can be found in the links below.

Things to consider: style of clothes, condition of clothes, brands of clothes, hair style, grooming products used, grooming products not used, amount of grooming products used, personal hygenie, state of fingernails, jewellery, condition of jewellery, kind of make-up, amount of make-up, posture, wallet, purse, condition of fashion and function accessories, cell phone, make of cell phone, condition of cell phone, perfume/cologne, kind of perfume/cologne, amount of perfume/cologne, tan, kind of tan, severity of tan, corrective eye lenses, habits, hobbies, health issues, profession (and the subsequent "marks" it would leave on someone).

Permissions (for Sherlock)

Backtagging: Backtagging is 99% a-okay at any time! (If a thread is time sensitive, I will note it specifically.)
Threadjacking: Generally fine! Again, exceptions will be marked.
Fourthwalling: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle knowledge is wonderful, but please no BBC Sherlock fourth-walling. Totally fine to tell him ACD wrote about a Victorian detective named Sherlock Holmes, not that there's a television show about him. Other versions of the Sherlock Holmes stories? Have at!
Killing/Injury: As a general rule, ask first, but I'm pretty good with going with what the direction of the thread requires. (Probably won't agree to kill Sherlock any time soon, but I'm open to the possibility, and definitely open to him getting hurt.)
Comfort Levels: Warn me before gore. Gore is fine, just warn first, please! Actually, warn for any R-rated situations (and discuss with me where appropriate), but especially gore.

How's My Driving

Please comment here with questions, comments, and concerns regarding the way I portray Sherlock.

Critique is more than welcome, but it is best if offered with examples of what I'm doing wrong and suggestions on how to improve. I may not always agree and/or take the advice, but it will all be noted.

Deduction 8 - [ action / audio ]

private action/introspection/background )

[It's evening before Sherlock turns on the Journal to address Luceti.

He's sulking in an empty flat on the top floor of Community House Two. A small dish in front of him has twelve cigarette butts -- a cheap American brand -- in it, smoked down to the filters. A thirteenth is half finished and in his hand.

There isn't much to say. There are no explanations to give, deductions to reveal, or clues to interpret. There is just one simple fact.

Perhaps that's why it's so hard to say.]

John Watson's gone.

Deduction 7 - [ audio ]

tw for mentions of drug use )

No laptop. No internet. No newspapers.

Completely isolated from the world.

No cases.

It's like the quaint little country vacation John keeps saying I need to take. [He does not seem to like that idea at all.]

Okay. I've taken it.

I'm done with it now.

I'm bored.

I want to be back in London. I want to be back at my work. I need to get back to my work.

Deduction 6 - [ written: filtered / audio: recorded ]

Written:

[It's something like a good day.

The item shop has been generous. His mobile phone-- left in Mycroft's possession, last he'd seen it-- and a violin. Not his, so it will take some getting used to, but a fine Stradivarius.

First, he writes a short note.]

[Filtered to Greg Lestrade, Sally Donovan, and John Watson: 70%]

Detective Inspector Lestrade, I have something for you. It will take three minutes. Sergeant Donovan may come as well.

SH

[It doesn't matter here, what he did or didn't do. Not really. And he's still not going to explain why he jumped off the roof of Saint Bartholomew's...

But he does owe Lestrade proof. Proof that the Detective Inspector didn't make a mistake by trusting him. Or, at least, not the kind of mistake his superiors (and even subordinates) thought he had. And proof for John that he hadn't been taken in by a con-man, even if John had never doubted him.

After all, being in control of the recording, he can make sure they don't hear the later parts.]

Audio:

[He sets aside the journal to wait for a response and takes up the violin. A few taps on the journal, and it's set up to record. Playback will be available, as he does not bother to filter it, but it will not be broadcast live. It's for his benefit he makes the recording: a second listen might help highlight the areas in which he needs to better adjust to the new instrument.]

Deduction 5 - [ audio / action ]

That one there.

...No. The other.

Thank you.

[Sherlock Holmes likes to talk as he works.

Today, he actually has a project. Gone is the boredom and lethargy, but he has not progressed into the mania of a case yet. He is all scientific control now, watching every flame and chemical and reaction with the utmost care.

There's a lot to do. Compounds need to be broken down so elements and simplier compounds can be isolated. Then those have to be correctly combined. A long process with the rudimentary equipment found in the laboratory he and Temperance share in her flat.

And whomever he is speaking to isn't the only one who has to listen to him.]

It's always about comfort.

Truth? Entirely expendable if one is not comfortable with it. People prefer what makes them feel at ease, what seems 'nicest.' Even if it's nothing more than a good story.

[And Moriarty was a very good storyteller.]

Whatever threatens their world-view least, they accept. Are delighted to take as proven fact, even if there is only conjecture to support it.

Sheep, following the butcher to slaughter, bleeting happily.

[Does he sound irritated?]

But everyone makes mistakes. All their deceptions? Eventually come unravelled. Strange as this place is, it is not an exception to this rule.

[That would be because he is. His mood has been just a slight bit volatile since his midnight "chat" with Moriarty. Whom he is quite sure will hear this, whom he wants to hear this, wants him to know he'll be waiting for that one mistake. His conversation with Lestrade hadn't helped either.

To the other in the room:]

That one now.

[A quiet sigh. The look he's getting doesn't need words to make its doubts clear.]

Oxford, John. I know what I'm doing.

Deduction 4 - [ written / action ]

[36 days.

He has been here for 36 days.

He has been here for 36 days without a case.

The wall of Temperance's flat? A wonderful way to pass the time. But the problem has been solved. The suggestion of Jilly Coppercorn and Sally Donovan (given independently but essentially the same) proved useful. The wall is gone, blocked by a table on one side, a bookcase on the other, and overlayed on top by painted plywood. Simple but effective.

Now? Now he's bored again.]

I've looked every other day for the last 26 days. Does anyone know if any shop here gets cigarettes?

Not picky about the brand at this point. But if anyone has Golden Virginia rolling tobacco, standard menthol filter tips, and Zig-Zag Classic rolling papers-- I want those.

SH

[He's in the living room of his flat, the journal set out on the table by his armchair.

...In his hands is a Blackberry. Not his mobile. No, this is of an obvious high-end. His is discreetly expensive. This one even has gold inlaid on it, or gold-painted metal. Hard to say from a distance.

But it's likely recognisable to someone else who's seen it before.

Irene Adler's.]

Deduction 3 - [ action / visual / written / accidental audio ]

[Residents of Community House 4, prepare for a long, noisy week.]

Day One )

Day Two )

Day Three )

[Day four:

Voice-

The journal was opened for note-taking, to try and figure out their next move. Inspiration has not struck, though. In the frustration of a self-repairing wall, the initial objective of wall removal had been forgotten in favor of simply seeing the full limits of this technology. In getting up to inspect the wall again, one or the other turned on the voice recording option.

It’s Sherlock who can be heard first:]
It doesn’t make sense. I mean, obviously, it’s happening. We have the proof, but it shouldn’t be possible.

There is a limit to every technology. [A pause as she presses her hand to her lips, thoughtful.] It is only a matter of time until we find the one variable the apartment cannot fix.

A flat shouldn’t fix itself at all. [He sounds almost petulant.] Might actually have some character with a few marks. [It’s just irritating at this point. A matter of principle, beyond wanting the space for a laboratory. And then...] Explosives?

[You can easily imagine the nod of another equally frustrated scientist. Even if this is only a matter of unusual technology, it only serves to exemplify all other oddities Brennan has since encountered.] Perhaps we can obtain phosphoric acid, as well.

[His smile is obvious in his voice.] Even if it didn’t work, it’d be fun to try.

[A chuckle.] I cannot argue with that. Though... Give me one moment, Sherlock. I’ll be right back.

[A minute passes in complete silence. Then, all that’s recorded is the sound of a handgun firing. Four rounds, straight into the wall.]

(Feel free to respond with your character [especially you CH4 residents!] at any time during the days when Sherlock and Brennan are working. Just specify what day it is.)

Deduction 2 - [ video ]

[They'd agreed to a week. A week without incident, of rest and recovery. Then, the unspoken half of it went, they would go their separate ways.

But after ten whole days without another word said about moving or kicking out...

The video feed kicks on in the early afternoon, aimed at one of the plain white walls of 2-21.]

This is unacceptable.

[Sherlock Holmes is back on his feet and physically feeling much better.

Sorry, Luceti.]

I need paint, wallpaper, and glue. Lots of all of it. Where can I find it?

Also. Regarding the hideously plain excuses for furniture in this flat-- There are obviously no cabs here, so I'm going to assume there are no trucks. How am I supposed to realistically re-furnish a flat? Surely in a place where wings are mysteriously attached to people, there is something better than just carting furniture almost a kilometre.

On a final note: If a human skull shows up in the item shop, it is mine. Return it to me at Community House 2, Room 21.

(Two edits:
A. the Imperial measurement is gone. Bad Lynn. No miles. Kilometres!
B. I spaced about the "only a mile wide" thing and was looking at the scale to try and figure it out. That's fixed in the entry too, now. Sorry about that.)

Deduction 1 - [ written ]

[Sherlock Holmes has been on bedrest for about 48 hours.

However, when his doctor decides to go out for supplies and to see if any of the detective's clothes have shown up (it was either that or let the man get up and see himself, and apparently that was not going to be allowed)... the patient lets himself get up. Not much, just enough to make it into the sitting room.

Which is just as white-washed as the bedroom. Damn it.

Once he can stand to be on his feet for more than ten minutes at a time, those walls are getting painted or papered or something.

He's had time enough to read his Journal and the Guide it contains, and the system itself is straightforward enough. Something like a computer but not quite as efficient. Still, it's something.

It doesn't matter to him that his Journal is in his bedroom and John's is sitting out. It's John's he grabs and a pen nearby that he writes with, unaware of what was broadcast over the journals the previous day.]

I am aware that damage to the wings is ill-advised. However, I am curious: Seeing the distinct disadvantage that they pose, has anyone attempted to surgically remove them? Not ripping or merely cutting-- a proper medical procedure. An amputation. Has it been attempted? If it has, to what end?
SH

[After he's written out all of that, he starts on another project. To some, it may just be evidence of extreme boredom. Others... Well. Others might recognise it.]
